PVA Bonding Agent
Technical Data Sheet
1. DESCRIPTION
Antel P V A Bonding Agent is a water based synthetic polymer
emulsion.
2. USES
The excellent adhesive power and resilience of Antel P V A
Bonding Agent make it a reliable medium as a :-
Bonding Agent.
Cement Additive.
General Purpose Adhesive.
3. PACKAGING
500 gms, 1 kg, 2.5 kg ,5 kg and 25 litre non returnable plastic
containers.
4. COLOUR
White becoming clear on drying.
5. STORAGE
Keep containers tightly closed when not in use and store in
warm dry conditions above 4°C.
Protect from freezing. Keep out of reach of children.
6. HEALTH & SAFETY
Being water based Antel P V A Bonding Agent is non flammable.
It is non toxic under normal conditions of use. Harmful if taken
internally. Like all synthetic polymer emulsions Antel P V A
Bonding Agent contains minute amounts of volatile organic
substances and efficient ventilation is therefore needed where
large quantities are used. Do not smoke and avoid inhalation of
fumes. If inhaled remove to fresh air immediately. Irritating to
eyes and skin.
If in contact with the eyes flush with copious amounts of water
and seek medical advice. Wash contaminated skin thoroughly with
soap and water. Ingestion - seek medical advice immediately.

8. INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
ANTEL P V A BONDING AGENT
To ensure a sound key for mortar or plaster renderings to walls
and ceilings, it is usual to either hack or score the surface in
order to provide a mechanical key, or to treat it with a special P
V A emulsion adhesive. The second alternative is far quicker, less
costly and avoids noise and dust. Treatment with emulsion is
essential on dense impervious surfaces (low suction backgrounds)
and on highly porous surfaces (high suction backgrounds). It is
also commonly applied to medium suction backgrounds to ensure
maximum adhesion.
INTERIOR WALLS
As with all re-rendering the wall must be clean and all loose
and friable material must be removed with a wire brush. Any grease
or water repellent contamination must be removed by using
degreasing wash. The surface is then treated with Antel P V A
Bonding Agent. The amount to use varies with the background and
particularly the porosity of the surface. As a general guide only
enough emulsion should be used to wet the surface thoroughly. Low
suction backgrounds e.g. glazed tiles and bricks or surfaces
painted with impervious coatings - treat with undiluted Antel P V
A Bonding Agent. Medium suction backgrounds e.g. weak
concrete mixes and lightweight building blocks - seal with one
part Antel P V A Bonding Agent diluted with five parts water,
allow two hours drying and treat again as for medium suction
backgrounds. In all case rendering may take place whilst the key
coat is wet or after it has dried.
EXTERIOR WALLS
The wall must first be thoroughly cleaned as described for
interior walls. A 3:1 mixture of sharp building sand and
ordinary Portland Cement is gauged with one part Antel P V A
Bonding Agent diluted with three parts water, to give a
consistency allowing a sharp stipple to be produced on the wall.
After the stipple coat has cured for at least four days, mortar
rendering may be applied in the normal way.
CEMENT ADDITIVE
Unlike many polymer emulsions Antel P V A Bonding Agent is not
destabilised by cement or plaster. It is easy to use for
increasing the resilience, adhesion and wear resistance of mixes,
particularly interior floor toppings, provided that these are not
subject to rising damp or other ingress of water. The sub floor
must be free from all loose material, grease or similar
contamination. The floor is then treated with a stipple coat as
described for exterior walls. After four days curing, the topping
can be laid. Optimum properties in the topping occur at roughly
20% Antel P V A Bonding Agent on cement weight. For a 3:1 mixture
of sharp sand and cement, this is achieved by gauging to normal
working consistency using one part Antel P V A Bonding Agent
diluted with three parts water. The wet mix can be laid in the
normal way but excessive towelling with metal floats is
inadvisable.
GENERAL PURPOSE ADHESIVE
During building operations there is often a need for a general
purpose adhesive where specialised materials are not warranted.
Antel P V A Bonding Agent is particularly useful in these
situations. Typical uses include fixing small runs of ceramic
tiles (provided that moisture cannot gain access to the bond) and
gluing battens or wooden structures not required to support heavy
loads.
NOTE
Because of the plasticiser content, Antel P V A Bonding Agent
must not be used for repairing furniture or in other situations
where heavy load bearing is important. It is also not recommended
for the fixing of expanded polystyrene tiles since the plasticiser
may soften the polystyrene and lead to bond failure. Antel P V A
Bonding Agent cannot be used to glue impervious materials
together, since it cannot dry, and will fail to develop a bond. |
