Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion
Technical Data Sheet
1.
DESCRIPTION
Antel
Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion is a high quality liquid bitumen emulsion
of brushable or trowelling consistency.
It dries giving a tough and resilient film that will
waterproof, weatherproof and protect.
The coating has excellent adhesion properties to most
building materials with more than adequate resistance to running
or slumping with changes of temperature.
2.
USES
Particularly
recommended for application to the following:-
Foundations,
retaining walls and similar
Structures
liable to be back filled.
Concrete
columns and beams.
Concrete
or defective asphalt roofs.
Iron
and steel against rust and corrosion.
3.
PACKAGING
5
litre and 25 litre non returnable plastic containers.
4.
COVERAGE
Approximately
1 m² per litre.
5.
STORAGE
Keep
containers tightly closed when not in use and store in warm dry
conditions. Protect
from freezing. Keep
out of reach of children.
6.
HEALTH & SAFETY
If
in contact with the eyes wash copiously with water for at least 15
minutes and obtain medical attention.
Prolonged or repeated contact with the skin can cause
irritation. Wash
contaminated skin immediately with hand cleaner and soap and
water. Harmful if
taken internally - seek medical attention immediately.
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.
Please

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
SURFACE
PREPARATION
Concrete
surfaces must be clean and free from all forms of contamination.
No sharp angles should be covered, cove the angles prior to
application.
COVERING
OF EXISTING EXPANSION JOINTS
For
covering of existing expansion joints it is important that the
following steps are taken.
Apply
a coat of Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion 75 mm wide either side of the
joint but short of the joint by
5 mm. Bed a length of
fibre glass scrim into the uncured emulsion and allow to dry.
A further coat of emulsion is then brushed over the entire
treatment. The final
coatings are applied in accordance with the full specification.
FOUNDATIONS,
RETAINING WALLS AND SIMILAR STRUCTURES PRIOR TO BACK FILLING.
Surfaces
must be made good. In
order to achieve this it is recommended that a cementitious
treatment incorporating Antel Waterproof Bonding Agent is used.
Apply two coats of Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion at the rate of
1 m² per litre coat, allowing sufficient drying time between
coats.
Care
must be taken to ensure that the application links up with any
Damproof Courses. Whilst
the second coat is still tacky a layer of building paper should be
placed in position to protect the coating during back filling.
The applied coatings must be allowed at least 48 hours to
dry prior to back filling.
CONCRETE
COLUMNS OR BEAMS
After
preparation apply two coats of Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion at the
rate of 1 m² per litre coat.
Allow the first coat to dry prior to the application of the
second coat. Whilst
the second coat is still tacky it must be completely blinded with
clean sharp sand. Allow
to cure and gently brush excess sand from the surface prior to the
final cladding.
CONCRETE
OR DEFECTIVE ASPHALT ROOFS.
(After
treatment of any expansion joints as detailed earlier)
Priming
- Prime the entire surface with a solution of Aqueous Bitumen
Emulsion diluted with 10 parts water.
Allow to dry.
Apply
the first coat of Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion at a rate of 1 m² per
litre. Whilst
applying the coating a reinforcement of fibre glass scrim or rot
proof hessian is laid on the wet coating and a further application
of emulsion is brushed into and over the reinforcement.
Allow to dry. Apply
a second coat at the same rate and if required blind of with clean
sharp sand.
PROTECTION
OF IRON AND STEEL
Thoroughly
prepare the surfaces to remove all traces of rust, scale or other
forms of contamination. Apply
two coats of Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion at the rate of
1
m² per litre coat allowing the first coat to dry prior to the
application of the second coat
SPECIAL
INSTRUCTIONS
Protect
from frost.
Do
not apply Aqueous Bitumen Emulsion if rain is expected.
The drying time will be affected and some material may be
washed into drains and watercourses.
Allow
adequate drying time between coats or intercoat delamination may
occur.
Apply
the second coat or subsequent coats at right angles to the
previously coats. This
ensures complete coverage and protection.
Clean
off tools and equipment in clean water to which a small amount of
detergent has been added.
Spills
or splashes should be washed off immediately with clean water.
Once dried it will be necessary to use White Spirt or Turps
Substitute.
Aqueous
Bitumen Emulsion is a highly viscous material but may be easily
brush applied.
Use
as supplied - it should not be necessary to thin the emulsion
prior to use.
