Preparation is of the utmost importance.
The physical removal of defective concrete is undertaken using whatever method is best suitable to a particular site.  Mechanical breaking, cutting, high pressure water jetting and so on.  The removal of the defective concrete should be thorough and ruthless.  If in doubt remove it!
Where steel reinforcement is found to be corroded it is essential that the steel is exposed until sound material is located.  The entire circumference of the steel must be exposed in order that preparation of the surface prior to repair is possible.
Edges of the areas to be prepared should be cut square to a depth of 10mm approximately.
Whilst it is not essential to grit blast the exposed steel reinforcement it is absolutely necessary to remove any build up of rust and remove all flaking rust.
Protection of the steel after preparation can be achieved by immediately coating with Antel Q-Mix Adhesion promoter and rust inhibitor.

2.  PRIMING

Priming of the prepared areas is recommended using Antel Q-Mix Adhesion Promoter and Rust Inhibitor. The surfaces to which the adhesion promoter is to be applied should be firstly wetted but not to an excess.   There should not be any free water.  The adhesion promoter is applied over the steel reinforcements and the entire area to which the repair mortar is to be applied.  The repair mortar must be applied to the adhesion promoter whilst it is still wet.

3.  REPAIR

Application of the Q-Mix repair mortar is best carried out using a steel float and trowel.  The material is firstly placed onto the repair area and compacted well before any attempt to finish the surface is undertaken.  Once the mass of the repair has been placed the surface material can be placed by the use of the steel float.  Finishing the surface should be completed with the minimum of effort.  The final smoothing of the repair can be carried out using the steel float which should be carefully cleaned and a fine mist spray of water applied.  Too much water will affect the finished surface.  Normal concrete practice should be followed for the effective protection and cure of the repair.

4.  CONCRETE DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENT

Reinforced concrete has been used as a very effective building material for a great number of years.  The expected life span of concrete in ideal conditions is very long indeed.  However due to many differing reasons concrete is vulnerable to degradation.  Control of mixes and the correct placing of the steel reinforcement in order to produce the required quality and cover has provided to be the cause of many early problems. 

The environment in which the structures have been built is now one of the major causes of deterioration of the concrete speeds up at an alarming rate.  It is essential therefore that repairs and protection should be carried out at the earliest possible stage.  Once the steel reinforcement has started to corrode visible signs of attack can be easily identified.  Harder to identify in the early stages is the effect of carbonation and acid gas attack.
